The Texas Folklore Society met in Tyler, Texas for its 101st Annual Meeting on April 21-23, 2017. We'd never held a meeting there before, but the Holiday Inn Tyler--South Broadway staff and city officials welcomed us like family and treated us well.

The Friday afternoon tour of the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden and Rose Museum was a big hit! Expert gardeners took groups through the garden and explained the many types of roses and other plants on site, and then we were able to go through the Rose Museum at our own pace. Afterward, we were treated to an ice cream social, hosted by the Tyler CVB reps and a couple of Azalea Belles. To top it all off, we were entertained by a barbershop quartet. Back at the hotel later, we had one of the best Hoots in many years, with several new performers joining some of the old guard.

Members heard papers on a wide variety of topics during Saturday's sessions. Prison music programs, Texas Freemasons, handmade bows (and arrows), filling station food, and Texas-sized pranks were some of the most interesting papers, but we also heard about J. Mason Brewer, David Crockett, Buffalo Soldiers, and Geronimo (the stuffed steer in George West).
