Call for Student Papers!
New Voices in Folklore Panel at the Texas Folklore Society Annual Meeting
March 28–30, 2024
The Westin San Antonio North, San Antonio, Texas
Student scholars, The Texas Folklore Society wants to hear from you! TFS is excited to celebrate the return of student panels at its 105th Annual Meeting.
Undergraduate and high school students are encouraged to submit proposals for papers to the “New Voices in Folklore” panel at the Texas Folklore Society Annual Meeting, slated for March 28–30, 2024. “New Voices” offers a way for students to get involved in the annual meeting in a low-stakes way, presenting to a smaller group, and getting more feedback and questions.
The TFS Annual Meeting is a friendly gathering of scholars and enthusiasts who come together to share their love of the folklore of Texas and the Southwest through a series of presentations of papers, sharing meals, social gatherings, and evening hootenannies. Texas Folklore is about preserving and passing on the region's cultural heritage, and we want to encourage students, in particular, to be a part of our long history.
Papers (or works in progress) on any topic in folklore are welcome from practitioners, researchers, and enthusiasts alike. If you are still working to finalize papers, a proposal of up to 500 words can also be submitted. Make sure this proposal clearly outlines the topic and your approach. Final papers can span anywhere from 5-12 pages in length. Presentations in the “new voices” panel will be 5-10 minutes depending on the number accepted.
As you plan your presentation, you're welcome to incorporate whatever you need to make your presentation come alive or to demonstrate your craft; we can help you with any audio-visual needs. What aspects of folklore are you interested in? Are you an expert in a particular craft? Are you an artist, a storyteller, a musician? Do you have expertise in a specific area of folklore? We would love for you to share it with us.
Papers from students can be submitted concurrently to the “New Voices” panel and to the general conference, but scholars can present only once at the conference. Scholarships may be available to assist with travel to this conference/panel.
Papers or proposals are DUE NOVEMBER 15.
Presenters must be members of the Texas Folklore Society. Not a member? Not a problem! It's easy and affordable. Annual member dues start at just $15 for students and $25 for individuals, with options for families, organizations, and lifetime memberships. Find more information about membership levels and benefits here or join online here.
Our Program Committee, Mary Ann Blue (Chair), Donna Ingham, and Kristina Downs eagerly await your proposals. Please submit your proposals to TexasFolkloreSociety@gmail.com by November 15.
