Posthumous publication dives into adventures of Ab Abernethy, friends
William Elliott, PhD., a longtime friend of F.E. “Ab” Abernethy, has published a portion of Ab's memoir, detailing the spelunking adventures and more. Ab served as Secretary-Editor for the for TFS from 1971–2004.
TFS announces location, date for 2023 Annual Meeting
Texas Folklore Society members are being asked to mark their calendars for the return to in-person events with our 104th Annual Meeting, set for April 6-9, 2023 in Waco!
Texas Folklore Society Joins Roadside Marker Grant Program to Recognize State’s Diverse Folklore
The current Legends & Lore grant application deadline is Monday, May 2. Legends & Lore grant funding includes the full cost of a marker, pole, and shipping. Two Legends & Lore grant rounds are held each year. The second Legends & Lore grant round in 2022 will open on Monday, Aug. 29. The deadline to submit a marker grant application during that round will be Monday, Oct. 17, 2022.

Over the years, the Texas Folklore Society has honored as Fellows folks who have shown their dedication and commitment to the mission of the Society. In 2022, TFS honors three individuals, dedicated to preserving and promoting folklore, Jim Harris, Mary Harris, and Jean Granberry Schnitz. Haile honored with Hootenanny Award
In 1956, Hermes Nye organized the first official TFS Hootenanny. We figured 65 years later would be the perfect time to honor someone from our family who has been an important part of keeping that tradition alive. The recipient of the inaugural Hermes Nye Hootenanny Award is Lee Haile of Tarpley, Texas, who has been leading hoots for the past few decades.
